URI Taps Vermont 94-56Vermont Victory Sweet For Players And Fans Kingston, RI The Rhode Island Rams delighted their fans with a pre New Year's Eve win over the University of Vermont. The Rams played all players. Everyone contributed with points. Over 6,400 people were on hand during this vacation break game. This is the first time that two Rhode Island natives faced each other in a NCAA Division IA basketball game. TJ Sorrentine from Pawtucket played for St. Raphael's under his father and Steve Mello from Bristol played basketball for Mt. Hope High School under coach Domenic Raiola. Sorrentine who is back this season after missing last year from a double wrist fracture, scored seven points. Mello ran the point for much of the second half, he scored eight points. It was a double win for most of the fans - seeing two Rhode Island favorites in action and of course the win for Rhode Island (now 10-2). The photos below tell the rest of the story. The Rams next face Big East power Seton Hall in New Jersey on January 1, 2004. Click on each thumbnail to see the larger photo.
